So, when the battery will not charge during operation, the remedy in my case is as following: I turn off the laptop, let the battery charge almost completely, turn on the lap top and, for now, the charging works. When I restart the computer, charging continues, but only on condition that the battery is more than 50% charged (I could not determine the correct percentage, but if it is poorly charged, then it does not charge after the computer restarts). If I unplug the charger while lap top (HP with WIN 10) is turend on and reconnect it, the battery will no longer charge. I bought a new, replacement charger, and tried other, original one, but didn't completely solve the problem. I had a similar problem, which started to occur when my charger connector was damaged. until the user does the same thing again in about 6 months' time I estimate :-)

As you say - bad design to allow that to happen so easily and, it seems, frequently.Īnyway, the solution was to replace the DC socket - the new one came complete with pin-separating central column and all is good again. That plastic column was missing from the problem laptop - must have been broken off by careless treatment when the plug was in the socket, and later fell out unnoticed by the user. Looking at another nearly identical HP laptop I saw that it had a plastic column inside the charging socket which held the pins in such a way that two contact the central plug pin, while the other two contact the inner surface of the outer ring of the DC plug.

until I moved the DC plug slightly, when it went back to the steady white light and no charging until shut down. Looking inside the charging socket I saw the 4 pins in the configuration you describe and separated one pair so they didn't touch the central pin of the DC plug, and bingo! Normal charging behaviour restored. I think the pins werent correctly lined up so it didnt work while on. The solution for me was looking at the pins inside the port on the laptop there are 4 pins, top, bottom, left and right. thank you! You hit the nail on the head.
